West is certain to be the main enemy of the Wahhabi movement and the Muslim Brotherhood because it is considered as the source of the chaos of the world, especially the decline of Islam in various parts of the world, 'sold' as a major issue. Without the hard work and love them in Indonesia, not be a very important book that can be published and circulated here. Not excessive if such book be the main reading students and students of Indonesia, so that a more equitable order of life, respect and honor that can be realized, at least the next few years.

Hopefully what Abdurrahman Wahid, Buya Maarif Shafi and his friends can be invaluable charitable jariyah for Indonesia. Amin.

Third, where the teaching of basic verification of the principal (usul) and where the teachings of the branches (furu '). Fourth, the jurisprudence presented as social ethics, rather than the positive law of nations. Fifth, the introduction of methodological philosophical, mainly related to cultural and social.
In view Mahfudz, the idea is not too excessive. Yet contextual understanding does not mean to leave and took fiqh absolutely. Karen Armstrong is a British prominent researcher in religious studies. After seven years as a Roman Catholic nun who failed to find “God” in the Papal system, she left the church in 1969 and continued her study of religion at Oxford University. Some of her works have become best sellers listed in the New York Times, as for example, The Gospel According to Woman (1987), Holy War (1991), Muhammad; A Biography of the Prophet (1992), and A History of God (1993).

The Battle for God is a sequel to Armstrong’s previous work: A History of God. Both works are interconnected. In a History of God, she describes the endeavor of searching for God undertaken by disciples of Semitic religions over the last 4000 years. In The Battle for God she describes the phenomena of fundamentalism within three monotheistic religions: Christianity, Jew and Islam. Her research into the history of these three religions charting their transformations during and since the European renaissance (Aufklärung) details how fundamentalism has arises as a logical reaction to modernism.

Recently fundamentalists have masterminded critical historical events such as the murder of the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin, the September 11 tragedy, and the frequent suicide bombings characteristic of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These are examples of the kind of dangerous activities in which fundamentalists are reacting to modernism. Though the perpetrators come from different religious backgrounds, they share a common characteristic, that is—religious fanatism.

Fundamentalism is one of the most widely discussed phenomenon of the 20th century. It has always been a part of the world views of radicals practicing the world’s major religions, not only Christianity and Islam, but also Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism and Confucianism. There is no lucid definition for the term “fundamentalism”. Initially, the term was used by American Protestants in the early 1990’s to differentiate themselves from the more liberal Protestants. Since then the term “fundamentalism” has been more freely used to refer to the purification movements to be found within all world religions. Therein all fundamentalist movements share certain approaches in that fundamentalism is a defense mechanism which arises as a reaction to a threat or crisis (Martin E. Marty and R. Scott Appleby, 1991)

The main argument in this book revolves around Armstrong’s conception of the world’s belief systems as being divided into two dichotomous categories: “myth versus logos” and the “conservative” versus the “modern.” Drawing on other social scientists work, she argues that humans have developed two ways of thinking and obtaining knowledge. Johannes Sloek similarly terms them— “myth” and “logos,” in his book of Devotional Language. Therein myth is a form of mystical knowledge, having an abstract supra-logical object, based not on fact and its truth capacity as determined by sense. Myth cannot be confirmed by rational evidence while logos depends on it, i.e. is a rational, pragmatic and scientific form of thinking. Logos is related to the facts and external realities, consequently it can be proved empirically.

To Armstrong, previously religions used both elements of myth and logos to create a perfect social structure of society’s life. When myth and logos are equally important, neither dominates. Logos exists in the realm of law and governance, while myth instead fills every corner of the human soul. Even so, myth is considered more prominent since it relates to the eternal, to the supra-logical.

However, since the renaissance, logos has come to dominate myth. The extraordinary achievements in the fields of science and technology has changed European thinking. The euphoria of science’s success has diminished the power of myth and relegated it to mere superstition. Rationality has thus become the only means for reaching the truth.

Religion has been made meaningless by the death of myth. The religious devotees have been seen as being drowned in spiritual emptiness. Yet the empty space left by the death of myth has resulted in fundamentalism, that is, in a form of rebellion in which the “ghost” of myth is reacting to the unlimited aggression in the domination of logos.

The second dichotomy is that of the “conservative” versus the “modern.” Issa J. Boullata has an interesting reaction to this. To him, the power of tradition, or of the spirit of “conservatism,” in Karen Armstrong’s terms, is oriented toward the past through a reference to an internal model. To the conservatives success lies in taking uswatun hasanah (good precedent) from previous experience since the past is for them the proof of success. On the other hand, modernity’s power lies in its future orientation in which it uses an external model as the point of reference. Progress is achieved through the attempt of creativity and progress based on rational values.

Kim Allen has noted that the fatal mistake with Armstrong’s dichotomy is in the logic she used. She incorrectly posits science as being pure logos, as purely modern, and uncritically praises the future orientation of science and its assumed natural acceptance of new ideas. On a basic level, she is right, nevertheless only a naïve thinker would deny the fact that science has a strong conservative component in its views about the existence of eternal, unchangeable, and perfect absolute truths (see Kim Allen, 2000). Indeed, Armstrong sees science as playing a stereotypical role diametrically opposed to religion. Though historically, religion and science were inseparable components within belief systems, and though over the centuries people have increasingly come to see science and religion as opposing each other, to some people this view is essentially incorrect.

Armstrong’s dichotomy creates a dilemma. She argues that the European renaissance was behind the paradigm shift from conservative into modern and that it resulted in the elimination of myth western society. By dividing the world in this way, she “exploits” history such that it appropriates her previous assumption. Little wonder then that her description seems overly “enforced” and that historical facts are ignored in order to support her opinion about the dichotomy of myth-logos and conservative-modern.

Armstrong’s efforts instead indicate that she is a fundamentalist herself. No fundamentalist dislikes this sort of dichotomy. The problem is not with the world, but with Armstrong’s categorization. Religion and science are two complex matters. Even though one can make distinctions between them in several respects, both are too complex to be so simply contrasted.

In his article, “An Ex-Nun in Search of God; but Biblically Non The Wiser,” professor Arthur Noble criticizes Armstrong’s attitude. He argues that her thinking tends to be biased even though she is no longer a nun. Indeed, in her last contribution in this religious debate, Battle for God, she strongly supports the image of the infallibility (ma’shum, innocence) of the Roman Catholic Church. Her awareness in explaining how fundamentalism is rooted and advanced within many major world religions is not accompanied with any criticism of the fallibility of fundamentalist Roman Catholicism.

In fact, Armstrong condems Christian fundamentalists in America who criticize the Roman Catholic Church. In particular, she focused on the fundamentalist “televangelists”, puritans, and Calvinists while neglecting the dark history of the Catholic church while highlighting a positive image of the Roman Catholic Church throughout the book. Apart from these and the earlier-mentioned defects, The Battle for God will be greatly appreciated by those interested in fundamentalism. The theme of fundamentalism as she uses it involves a new spirit and point of view. She shows us how and why fundamentalists appear in every major religion and she reveals their real objectives both accurately and brilliantly.

Such studies allow us to be more objective toward fundamentalists and not merely observe them as movements of orthodoxy, Puritanism, or revivalism an such, but appraise them just as she writes: “Fundamentalism is indeed a complex, innovative and modern movement”.

I never read any work of any of Paulo Coelho before, so I was somewhat surprised by the pagan spirituality of this little novel. This is the story of Brida, an Irish girl in training to become a witch. It is full of beautifully worded prose, I found myself making little tics and stars beside many paragraphs to go back and check again.

There are some seriously high minded spirituality folded into this simple book about a woman's quest to learn to use his strength and his heart. I'm very interested in the Catholic Christianity woven within the teachings of the more traditional magic and philosophy. This, apparently, one of the earlier works of Coelho who eventually had translatted from the original Portuguese. I found a good way to stimulate my appetite for the work of others before I make a decision about what I think of him as a writer.

Discussing the various rituals that are located in the Wiccan religion, Coelho offers intimate insights into the subject taboo and Religion. The story managed to lead the reader to consider the idea of reincarnation, which plays an important role in the religion of Wicca. He also introduced the idea and / or the possibility of finding and loving two soul mates in the same life, leaving the reader questioning the possibility that it may love or the idea that, far beyond the reach and simple understanding. This book is based on the results of research using the scientific method. Good in this book - other than the objective results of his research - is the emotion we can get up when reading it; also sura-sura in the Quran unexplained chronological revelation. Here, I discuss only the parts of the story that has aroused emotions, because that's the most memorable moment to read this book. The stories are as follows:

1. The spirit of the Muslim forces in the Battle of Badr.

At that time the Muslim army led by the prophet Muhammad was dealing with the forces of Quraysh. Seeing the number of troops that are very small compared to the number of troops Quraish, the prophet also feel very anxious if not on his side victory. Therefore, it is 'backward' (with Abu Bakr) and then pray for help to Allah SWT. When the Prophet prayed doze off, plainly soon realized again, then - along with Abu Bakr - back forward. I have long been wanting to read this novel, finally da spare time as well. Tim Powers did an excellent job of combining our favorite pirate myth and magic into one big book. The system takes a little magic to get used to and ultimately be explained in detail is quite good towards the end of the novel and go as far to explain why the magic has been removed from the earth. Without giving any answers, I think it is an interesting and intelligent way to explain the magic.

On Stranger Tides run fast enough and move on from there a decent clip. The Carmichael has been heavily invaded by pirates and the ship was the mastermind John Chandagnac, who were forced to become pirates themselves or die, he later became a feared pirate known as Jack Shandy. As the ship prepared for the famous Blackbeard Captain Shandy evil plans must make a stand to keep crime at bay in the world.

On Stranger Tides involves a lot of tropical locales and do a great job to show that the pirate life is not always looting and plundering, sometimes it is hard work. This story has some entertaining dialogue between the characters and has many twists and turns as we read together. It is not surprising that the novel was bought by Disney to be made into a fourth Pirates of The Caribbean movie Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. That is why I have a hard time with the novel in some areas as I continue to find myself imagining Johnny Depp and Jeffrey Rush in portions of this book. I can not stop imagining Captain Jack Sparrow instead of acting Shandy know what's going on in the novel that really lowers the value of entertainment. I think if I do not know that the book was turned into the fourth film I would enjoy more books. That's not to say this book is bad, but I would rather read a book for his own good and not for what it would be on the big screen. On Stranger Tides is a very good book with some clever dialogue and scenes of gripping adventure. THE DARK TOWER VII: The Dark Tower by Stephen King

The first 4 volumes of this series are worthwhile, gripping, interesting, mysterious, cryptic (although the 4th started showing some signs of weakness). But the last 3 are sorry excuses for Dark Tower books. I think Stephen King was scrambling to finish his series after his nearly-fatal injury, and even he realized that these last books were disappointments. Many artists lose the fire & vigor of their youth, especially those surrounded by mega-riches and mega-adulation, and that is the case with this author & series. A young King bit off more than the old one could chew--and I think he feels some serious regret that he waited so long to finish it that he could no longer do his wonderful series justice.

The last few books of the series have him making these very criticisms about himself. But what is really annoying is the sense one gets that King is projecting some of his frustrations onto his audience (he literally pauses and chastises readers eager to know what happens when Roland comes to the Tower). Well excuse us for caring in the first place, Mr. King! Taking the time to warn people away from writing him or visiting him? I've always been fond of King, for a popular writer, but his tone in the afterword just leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.

I feel like those reviewers praising the last 3 DT books are, in some way, dishonoring the first 4 by not being keen enough readers to notice the obvious differences between the quality of the first half of the series and the last. Sure, the last 3 DT books are a fun, "action-packed" read that will have you turning pages quickly, but c'mon, you could turn to any comic book or "young adult" novel for that, and the first few DT books were MORE than that. I get the sense that the big fans of these last 3 DT books also heap praise on Star Wars novels, Sci-Fi channel TV movies, and other junk-food for the mind that takes no real discernment or taste to appreciate. And hey, that's fine if you're a teenager whose reading tastes aren't yet that sophisticated or nuanced, or just someone stuck at the reading-level of an adolescent, but I feel that the first DT books were really something more than dorky, fan-boy fodder, which is what the series ended up sinking to.

Stop and think about it: King using inventions/ideas from the Harry Potter universe?! Geez, how desperate must he have really been to resort to such cheap corner-cutting?! Even basic rules of writing, such as "Show, don't tell" are violated by King in these last books. His book _On Writing_ clearly shows that he knows a lot about the craft of writing intelligently and telling stories well, so what in the hell happened to his judgement? Not to be disrespectful or crude, but I suspect that getting hit by the van and being put on heavy medication might have really affected his abilities, even to the point of brain-damage. The lure of the mega-bucks these last books would bring probably played a part in bothering with them, as well.

Praise these last Dark Tower books all you want, fan-boys, but don't assume that it means that you appreciate the series as much as those of us who feel seriously let down! It would have been a better end if the series remained incomplete---much more mystery and magic would have been retained, and the series might have gone down as a classic, with everyone left to imagine to themselves, "What was going to happen to Roland? WASHINGTON OF LIFE by Ron Chernow

During one of the darkest hours of the American Revolution, a pamphlet appeared warning of danger within the Patriot camp. The 1777 tract entitled The Thoughts of a Freeman condemned the generalship of the very man elevated to command the military forces fighting for American independence. Worse still, the pamphlet asserted that “the people of America have been guilty of idolatry in making a man their God.”

The object of these withering rebukes was General George Washington.

Every major figure in public affairs experiences the vitriol of a “bad press” from time to time. Nevertheless, it is a considerable shock to read indictments of Washington in the letters of Patriot leaders such John Adams, Dr. Benjamin Rush and even Thomas Jefferson. Though some of these remarks were valid criticisms of specific decisions on the part of Washington, the reality of his wartime situation stands in marked contrast to the adulation later heaped upon him. As Abraham Lincoln would experience during the Civil War, Washington was frequently distrusted and damned during his lifetime, often by political colleagues and fellow officers who should have known better.

A magnificent new account of Washington’s life by Ron Chernow paints a far different portrait of “The Father of Our Country” than usually appears in biographies written for general readers. Washington, according to Chernow, was indeed a bold Patriot leader. He was also man of hard-driving personal ambition, with a volcanic temper held in check by constant efforts at self-control. And behind Washington’s austere, unsmiling public pose, an inferiority complex lingered from the genteel poverty of his childhood and youth.

How then did Washington fight and win a two-front war versus the British Empire on the one hand and malcontents in the Patriot camp on the other? How was he able to navigate American democracy to a relatively safe harbor during the tumultuous years of his presidency? Answers can be found, ironically, in his early life in the slave-owning, hierarchical society of colonial Virginia. Washington triumphed during the American Revolution because he had earlier mastered the seething forces of rebellion within himself.

Washington’s education in the harsh realities of life started early. His father died in 1743 when he was eleven years old, the bulk of the estate going to his half-brothers. According to the reckoning of historians, Washington received the equivalent of a seventh grade education. By the standards of 18th century America, that was a satisfactory degree of formal learning. For Washington, however, it was a handicap that plagued him for most of his life. When working with college-educated men like John Adams, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, he was frequently at a disadvantage. Much of the stiff formality of Washington’s demeanor and his over reliance on the advice of subordinates resulted from deep feelings of insecurity. For a man thrust on to the center stage of world events, the lack of a college degree was more than a serious liability. It was a nagging threat to his own self-esteem.

As a young boy, Washington was taught to conform and – outwardly, at least – he accepted his place in Virginia society. The very earliest writings of Washington to survive are a set of 110 maxims of personal conduct that he copied by hand. Most dealt with the correct manner of acting in the colonial pecking order, the proper manner of “pulling off your Hat to Persons of Distinction” and injunctions to “always submit your judgment to others with modesty.”

When it came to copying Maxim 110, however, the tone suddenly changed. The future course of Washington’s life and America’s liberty was stunningly embodied in a principle that had nothing to do with bowing and scraping: “Labour to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire called conscience.”

Chernow writes with commendable insight into the childhood struggles of Washington. His father’s early death, Chernow concludes, led Washington to develop “the deeply rooted toughness of children forced to function as adults at an early age.” But the first – and longest – school of adversity for the young Virginian was his relationship with his widowed mother.

One could write a lengthy “psycho-biography” of Washington on the theme that the revolt he led against England, the “mother country” of the thirteen colonies, was a delayed act of defiance toward his mother, Mary Ball Washington. Chernow refrains from doing so, though he does teasingly write that “one is tempted to say that the most formidable general George Washington ever encountered was his mother.” Washington, in fact, could deny nothing to his long-lived “Honored Madam.” This included carrying out her demands to break-up slave families, a practice he loathed and which bothered her conscience not a bit.

The young Washington found solace in trips to the Mount Vernon estate of his half-brother Lawrence and long-term escape beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia’s western frontier. What followed became the stuff of legend.

Leading a hastily raised regiment of Virginians into the wilderness, Washington sought to block the advance of the French from Canada into the Ohio Valley. A skirmish with French troops from the garrison of Fort Duquesne near present-day Pittsburgh ignited the French and Indian War which spread to Europe, the West Indies and India. Washington had fired the first shot of what is officially called the Seven Years War, though Winston Churchill more accurately termed it “The First World War.” After initial disasters, the British achieved total victory. For Washington, the chief legacy of the war was that it supplied him with the military credentials to lead the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Washington came to believe that he was shielded by the “hand of Providence” during these frontier battles. After reading how he escaped death in the bloody ambush known as “Braddock’s Defeat” in 1755, it is hard not to agree with him. The record of Washington’s role in the war, however, was blotted by mistakes and blunders. At one point, he negotiated his way out of a trap, but, not speaking French, he signed his name to a document stating that he had assassinated a French officer. His valor compensated for such missteps. Yet, it was more the fact the he was virtually the “last man standing” during the Braddock debacle, than any special military aptitude, that set him on the paths of glory. []

However, by the end of the novel, he discovers that "treasure lies where your heart belongs", and that the treasure was the journey itself, the discoveries he made, and the wisdom he acquired.

"The Alchemist", is an exciting novel that bursts with optimism; it is the kind of novel that tells you that everything is possible as long as you really want it to happen. That may sound like an oversimplified version of new-age philosophy and mysticism, but as Coelho states "simple things are the most valuable and only wise people appreciate them".

As the alchemist himself says, when he appears to Santiago in the form of an old king "when you really want something to happen, the whole universe conspires so that your wish comes true". This is the core of the novel's philosophy and a motif that echoes behind Coelho's writing all through "The Alchemist". And isn't it true that the whole of humankind desperately wants to believe the old king when he says that the greatest lie in the world is that at some point we lose the ability to control our lives, and become the pawns of fate. Perhaps this is the secret of Coelho's success: that he tells people what they want to hear, or rather that he tells them that what they wish for but never thought possible could even be probable.
Coelho also suggests that those who do not have the courage to follow their " Personal Myth", are doomed to a life of emptiness, misery, and unfulfillment. Fear of failure seems to be the greatest obstacle to happiness. As the old crystal-seller tragically confesses: " I am afraid that great disappointment awaits me, and so I prefer to dream". This is where Coelho really captures the drama of man, who sacrifices fulfillment to conformity, who knows he can achieve greatness but denies to do so, and ends up living a life of void.

It is interesting to see that Coelho presents the person who denies to follow his dream as the person who denies to see God, and that "every happy person carries God within him". However, only few people choose to follow the road that has been made for them, and find God while searching for their destiny, and their mission on earth.

Consequently, is Coelho suggesting that the alchemists found God while searching for the elixir of life and the philosopher's stone? What is certain is that the symbolism of the text is a parallel to the symbolism and the symbolic language of alchemism, and similarly the symbolism of dreams is presented as " God's language".

It is also symbolic that Santiago finds his soul-mate, and the secrets of wisdom in the wilderness of the desert. The "wilderness" is a symbol that has been used by many great writers e.g.. Austen in "Mansfield Park", and Shakespeare in "King Lear". In the desert, Santiago meets his "twin-soul" and discovers that love is the core of existence and creation. As Coelho explains, when we love, we always try to improve ourselves, and that's when everything is possible. The subject of love inspires a beautiful lyricism in Coelho's writing: " I love you because the whole universe conspired for me to come close to you."

"The Alchemist" is a novel that may appeal to everybody, because we can all identify with Santiago: all of us have dreams, and are dying for somebody to tell us that they may come true. The novel skillfully combines words of wisdom, philosophy, and simplicity of meaning and language, which makes it particularly readable and accounts for its bestselling status. []
